Wiring the House

November 6, 2007 at 11:31 pm (DIY) (, )

Back in April, I started wiring the house for internet and tv. This weekend I was finally able to finish! It’s taken so long, because I’ve needed access to the subfloor, as I’ve been running the cable beneath the floorboards and between existing holes in the walls.

We now have ethernet sockets in pretty much all rooms, and satellite cable too. It all fans out from a central point in the dining room, where all the cables meet at a “patch panel”. There have been a few hiccups, but generally it’s all worked out nicely and it’s great to get rid of the “temporary” cables that have trailed down the stairs for that last year!

Still waiting on builder’s quotes…

March 25, 2007 at 8:31 pm (DIY, House renovation) (, , )

We’ve seen a few builders now and are waiting for their quotes; we haven’t done much work ourselves apart from a few small things; a coat rack (we’ve been bundling our coats on the banister), rehanging the bedroom doors (finally switching hinges from one side to the other), and I’ve started the process for the imminent wiring for ethernet 🙂

The plan is a have a central hub in the dining room and run ethernet and satellite cables to each room. I’ll probably run speaker cable in the sitting room too. All this will be under the floors (a few boards are already lifted from the electric rewire). It’s a bit tricky in places, especially going through doorways, as there’s already electricity cables (interference) and hot pipes to avoid!

I’ll post pictures when I have some – wish me luck!
